Making Waves at Silver Lake Schools 2005-2006

It’s another year full of author visits for students in the Silver Lake Regional School District.  The successful  Reading at the Lake program  is underway for a second year.  This program, which was implemented by assistant superintendent  Liz Sorrell and organized by library teachers and reading consultant Kathy Donovan of Turning Pages, is well received by students, teachers, and parents.

September brought author Matt Tavares to fourth graders.  Using his latest book, Mudball, he shared the process of getting a book published from idea to published product, Students saw that even a famous author has to take the time to go through the writing process draft after draft.

In October, middle school students met with Dr. Darylyne Murawski  a scientist and nature photographer.  She has used her knowledge and research of insects and animals to write several science children’s books, as well as articles in publications such as National Geographic and Ranger Rick.  Students were spell-bound as they viewed the photographs of this amazing scientist who has traveled the world researching nature as a scientist with the eyes of an artist.  Jana Dillon was a hit with the kindergarten students, as she shared her seasonal story featuring Jeb scarecrow.

David Biedryzcki returned in November.  This author/illustrator wears many hats.  He is author of the new Ace Lacewing Bug Detective series and has illustrated several children’s book. As a commercial artist, his work can be seen on the supermarket shelves from the famous cow on the Hood milk cartons to the packaging on tea boxes.  He demonstrated to the second grade students how he uses his computer to complete his iillustrations.   Second graders enjoyed making their own bugs using Kid Pix.   Third graders were in awe as Marcia Sewall shared the artwork used in the production of The Pilgrim of Plimoth.  Sewall spoke of her many hours of research and visits to Plimoth Plantation that went into the production of her nonfiction book.

A Ya-hoo-a-roo for  Reading  event  took  place in November to celebrate Family Literacy Month. Over two hundred parents and children gathered in the auditorium at Kingston Intermediate School to listen to author and reading consultant Barbara Larmon Failing read her popular children's story Lasso Lou and Cowboy McCoy. The event included reading activities for the children while parents joined Barbara for a presentation on Raising Readers.

Plympton resident Carolyn DeCristofano is just one of the authors planned for the second half of the school year.  Last year Reading at the Lake made a splash with our students, this year it’s making waves!
